Shen

Shen is a Launchy in Ender Wiggin's original launch group at Battle School, one of the boys who arrives with Ender and shares his early struggles. He is small, ambitious, and easily needled, which makes him an early target for Bernard's bullying. When Bernard begins to establish his dominance over the launch group, he nicknames Shen "Worm" because of his small size and the way he wiggles his butt when he walks. Shen storms off in anger, but the mockery continues, and he becomes one of the boys who chafes under Bernard's rule. This resentment makes him receptive to Ender's quiet efforts to undermine Bernard's authority, and he becomes one of the first boys to sit with Ender at a meal, marking the beginning of Ender's isolation ending.

Early Friendship and the War of Desks

Shen's friendship with Ender develops during the "war of desks" against Bernard. When Ender sends a fake message signed "GOD" to every desk in the room, Shen is the first to laugh and look at Ender, silently acknowledging that Ender is responsible. Ender shrugs, pretending ignorance, but Shen knows the truth and later asks Ender how he did it. Ender deflects, but Shen's curiosity and admiration help break the ice between them. At breakfast, Shen asks Ender if he really wiggles his butt when he walks, and Ender reassures him, saying, "Just a little. Just don't take such big long steps, that's all." Shen nods, and they laugh together, joined by two other Launchies. This moment marks the end of Ender's isolation and the beginning of a small circle of friends.

Role in Ender's Practice Sessions

Shen becomes a regular participant in Ender's unofficial evening practice sessions, which Ender organizes to train himself and other Launchies in null-gravity combat. When the older boys begin to harass the group, trying to break up the practices, Shen is one of the most defiant. He tells Ender, "We aren't scared and we don't care, so you owe it to us to go on. We need the practice and so do you." Shen also takes Ender's advice about using the older boys' taunts to their advantage, leading a group of four Launchies in reciting the insults loudly, turning them into nursery rhymes. This provokes some of the older boys into attacking, but Ender's group, though smaller, is better coordinated and manages to escape without serious injury.

Later Career and Command School

Shen does not become a toon leader in Battle School, but he remains a friend and ally to Ender. When Ender becomes commander of Dragon Army, Shen is not among his soldiers, but he is later selected to attend Command School, where he becomes one of Ender's squadron leaders. In the simulator battles, Shen proves to be a capable commander, though not as brilliant as Alai or Bean. During the final battle of the Third Invasion, Shen is one of the squadron leaders who helps Ender execute his desperate plan to destroy the bugger homeworld. He is present when Ender orders the attack on the planet, and he participates in the cheers of victory when the battle is won.

Personality and Significance

Shen is characterized by his loyalty, his sense of humor, and his willingness to stand up for his friends. He is not a leader, but he is a reliable and supportive presence in Ender's life, helping to counter the isolation that the teachers deliberately impose on Ender. His friendship with Ender, along with Alai's, provides Ender with a sense of belonging and normalcy in the otherwise harsh environment of Battle School. Shen's role in the story highlights the importance of friendship and loyalty in Ender's development, and his presence in the final battles underscores the theme that Ender's success is not achieved alone but through the trust and cooperation of his comrades.
